After sending the final files off for The Awakening, a short comic I made, I figured I would post a bit of the process behind making it. The Awakening is a 16 page, black and white comic about a young boy’s dreams of the dark forest that surrounds his house.
Let’s start with the cover and the small thumbnail sketch.
I scan the thumbnail sketch in and work on it digitally until I get everything how I’d like it to look.
After getting the drawing tightened up and an idea of the type placement, I’ll print out the sketch and draw it in blue pencil and ink it traditionally.
Final inks scanned, color added, and typography placed.
Next, the process of making the interior pages. I start with small thumbnails to layout the story and make sure everything works sequentially over the course of the entire issue.
Next I rough out the thumbnails to a larger size, correct dimensions, proportions, etc. Then I’ll scan in my rough sketches and work on them digitally correcting anything that looks strange or incorrect.
I also start working on values and shadows. After I figure like the compositions and values I print the picture out either black and white or blue line and move onto inking.
Final inks above. After the inking is cleaned up in photoshop I move onto adding color, or in this case black and white values, then the typography.
Here’s a preview of the final issue which will be on sale in February.
Thanks for reading!
Welcome to Clearwater Village, a small suburb where nothing is as it seems and everyone has secrets better left in the dark.
Late last year I began a web comic called Clearwater Village. I’ll be updating the comic sporadically when a story hits me or can find the time. There are two chapters up now, enjoy!
Here is the first chapter of LOVEBIRDS Book one “The Long Road” written and illustrated by David Wilson. Below the preview is a collection of process pictures with some notes. If you like what you see LOVEBIRDS is on sale at amazon here.
Character studies in sketchbook. None of these are meant to be perfect in any way. I like to do loose, quick sketches trying to capture the feel or look of a character. These drawings are more idea based than art based. Finding wardrobes, appearance quirks, etc.
Below are a couple process pics of making a cover image, ink splatting and color studies over quick layouts.
Over the past year I’ve spent a lot of my free time writing and illustrating the first installment of my graphic novel called Lovebirds.
Ravaged by gangs, poverty, drugs, and violence, the world is no longer the place it was so many years ago. After the loss of his wife and child to the notorious street gang The Bastards, Damian wanders the broken roads alone in the only running car left trying to stay alive one more day.
Miles away, the savage king-pin and leader of The Bastards, Lord Baylor has enlisted two dangerous killers, The Brothers Maero, to hunt down and bring him Mira Cross, a young woman who is trying to assassinate him for the murder of her family.
Lovebirds is the tale of two separate lives intertwining in a violent storm of chaos, blood, destruction and revenge.
Lovebirds Volume 01 The Long Road is 80 pages, 6×9 perfect bound book, full color. You can purchase the physical copy from Amazon ($12.99) or a digital copy at Gumroad ($5.00).
Did a quick turnaround piece for Culture of Cult’s 75th Anniversary of Batman. Ink and brush.
I got some copies of The Low Issue 01 in yesterday. I’m hoping to have them for sale by the end of this week or early next week. I’ll keep you posted. I got them printed through Comixpress and I must say they did a wonderful job! For more information on The Low you can check out the Facebook or hold tight for the website coming soon.
I just ordered copies of the first issue of The Low. A comic book about a group of young men and women struggling to survive in a town jailed off from the outside world. Fighting cops, the government, and more strange predicaments. The book is very loosely based off of the short film Exodus I made a couple years ago. Anyway, here’s the cover for the book as well as a variant cover I got printed up for the fun of it. Looking for an April release.

I just funded a kickstarter for one of my favorite comic books The Goon to be created into a movie reel to hopefully be a movie. If you don’t know The Goon, check it out. If you do and want to donate go here…
I drew these images for a graphic novel about a year ago. I busted them back out to practice with my wacom tablet. The illustrations are done with brush, ink, and now digital color. I’m not sold on using a Wacom for everything, but for comic illustrations or quick deadlines it’s definitely a great tool.
