Mostly sketches, scribbles, and rushed landscapes here are some of my favorite pages from my “nature” sketchbook.
I love sketchbooks but I don’t utilize my sketchbooks enough. Most of them are covered in scribbles, rough thumbnails, layouts, ideas, or notes for client work. Not art or experimentation. I’m trying to change that.
One of my biggest problems in completing art based sketchbooks is that without a certain project or goal in mind I never know what to draw. That gave me an idea (and not a cheap one). I purchased different sketchbooks for different subject matters in hopes it will give me content to fill these books. One sketchbook for all things natural; plants in my yard, bugs I find, landscapes, outdoor adventures, etc. One for characters; super heroes, movie characters, celebrities. I have a small one for traveling. I have one for more fantasy or weird based subject matters. I have one just to try new techniques and another one for writing and personal opinion subject matters.
That might seem like overkill but it has given me a way to break up my sketchbooks into small assignments. One day I’ll work in the character book, the next day I make sure to take my supplies outside and explore nature, so on and so forth.
In terms of my art making, having a few different sketchbooks has made a big impact on the amount I’m drawing, trying new things and having more fun filling each book.
Uploaded some photos from my sketchbooks over the last six or seven years. Here are a few shots. You can view all 84 photos here.
Here’s a look at some shirts I designed and printed for The Worlders. We wanted to make a shirt that worked two ways so with a little bit of elbow grease we produced these guys. Super large print on black and white shirts. Modeled by the grizzly Colin.
The second thing I’m posting is a sketchbook. I have like 3 sketch books going on at all times for different things. I keep one for writings/ideas/random, one for when I travel and a third for a special topic. This sketchbook was based on portraits. I use the sketchbooks to work on my drawing skills but mostly to play around with technique.
I’ve been doing some drawing in my sketchbooks lately. Take a peek. Also, The Horse Is Here Now Volume 2 is almost done. Might be releasing it earlier than October. I’ll let you know.
I can’t believe tomorrow is already August, 20th. Where has my summer been? I’m listening to Gil Mantera’s Party Dream right now. “Little synthesizer, you’re my best friend. Little synthesizer your love never ends”. It’s making me think of the only time I went to see them. At the Grog shop in Cleveland. I was so excited. I had heard they did crazy stuff on stage, and put on a REALLY good show. They had no opening bands and we got to the Grog Shop around 9 or 10 PM (I think… it was pretty late is the point I’m trying to make here, we weren’t early to the show) and we waited and waited and waited and waited. I don’t remember around what time we left exactly but it was LATE. They might have not went on til 1 or 2 in the morning if I remember correctly. Either way, I never got to see them. Maybe one day. I would recommend checking them out. I havent’ heard any new material so I’m not sure if it’s good or not but the stuff I own is great.
